Simple & Authentic Homemade Taco Seasoning

Updated: Aug 30

Making your own taco seasoning is super easy and takes less than 5 minutes! Plus, most premade taco seasoning mixes are filled with sugar and/or other unwanted chemicals, so by making your own, you can feel safe knowing exactly what is being put into it. Forget Taco Tuesday; when you use this seasoning, you will want tacos every day!

Servings: 1/2 cup

Total Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

1 1/2 tbsp of smoked paprika

1 1/2 tbsp of ground cumin

1 tbsp of chili powder

1 tbsp of garlick powder

1 tbsp of dried oregano or Italian seasoning

1 tbsp of onion powder (Optional)

1 tbsp of salt

1/2 tbsp of black pepper

1/4 tsp of cayenne pepper (Optional)

Instructions:

  1. Add all of the ingredients to a bowl and mix until well combined, OR add all of the ingredients to a mason jar and shake until well combined.

  2. Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for about 6 months to a year. 4-5 tbsp equals roughly one packet of store-bought taco seasoning.

Notes:

  • The onion powder is listed as an optional ingredient because I always cook fresh onions with the meat to use for tacos. But, feel free to add onion powder if you have it.

  • This recipe is not that spicy at all without the optional cayenne pepper, but you could always adjust the ingredients to your liking.

  • For optimal freshness, I would use this seasoning within 6 months, even though it technically lasts longer.

  • Taco seasoning is slightly different than Mexican seasoning, as the latter usually contains more pepper and is hotter.

  • Usually, taco seasonings contain more chili powder than this one, but I have found that I like the flavour a lot more if the paprika and cumin stand out more. But if you like more of the chili powder taste, feel free to increase the amount to 1 1/2 - 2 tbsps.

I hope after trying this recipe you never go back to buying premade taco seasoning, as the taste simply cannot compare. You can even use this taco seasoning for other recipes because it is pretty versatile.
